Watch this space for more details of my upcoming work at Fly Gallery, 1172 Queen Street West, Toronto, during the month of April. All I'm saying for now is that there are some sheep involved. Saturday, March 24, 2007

"As a collector of vintage and modern atomic clocks, I discovered it was possible, using gear found at home, to convert our family minivan into a mobile high-precision time laboratory, complete with batteries, power converters, time interval counters, three children, and three cesium clocks" (via kottke.org) Tuesday, March 06, 2007
I was planning to post something about Project Mohole, mostly because I started babbling about it after eating too much cereal and staring at a lava lamp, but today, it turns out that the whole thing was unnecessary, because they just found a gaping hole in the the earth's crust! And yes, that headline should read "Welsh Scientists in Journey to Earth's Mantle." Of course, I prefer to think of the Earth as being composed of Crust and Filling. Spirit Duplicator on Wikipedia. I had always thought that the "Ditto Machine"* was the same as a mimeograph, but, in fact they are distinct processes. The Ditto machine smells better, for one thing. (Younger readers can go back to text messaging and playing Wii, or whatever the hell it is you do, and excuse the interruption) *actually, I had totally forgotten the name "Ditto Machine" until I started looking this stuff up, but the smell is burned into my brain. The whole thing started with me wishing that fortune cookie fortunes were still made on mimeographs, rather than offset printed. Labels: retrotech Antique Copying Machines at Early Office Museum. My mom worked in an office that had one of these, and my sister and I burned through a fair bit of the special paper for it when she wasn't looking. Labels: retrotech Thursday, March 01, 2007
